I am interested in how very precise, reproducible, and robust patterns of gene expression are established in developing organisms by stochastic gene networks. Despite considerable variability in the expression of individual genes shown in recent experiments and predicted by stochastic models of expression, the steady-state expression levels in natural pathways remain surprising reliable. I am using both theoretical modeling and gene manipulation experiments to uncover the biophysical basis of this reliability in the developing Drosophila embryo.
